The $1,000 rule

Why everything here is a small job

California lets a person do home repairs without a contractor license only when the whole job is under $1,000 in labor and materials, needs no building permit and is not one piece of a bigger project (Business and Professions Code 7048, raised from $500 in 2025).

That is the legal home of the independent handyman, so this site is built around it. The quote form asks a quick budget question, and anything bigger or permit-related goes only to licensed contractors. No splitting a project into small contracts to squeeze under the line.

What a handyman can legally do in California

Need something bigger?

These jobs need a permit, new wiring or plumbing, or usually cost over $1,000, so California requires a licensed contractor. You can still request them here: they go only to licensed partners.

  • Garbage disposal with new wiringLike-for-like plug-in swaps are fine; hardwiring or a new circuit is not.
  • Ceiling fan where no fan box existsSwap on an existing fan-rated box is fine; new box or wiring is licensed C-10 work.
  • New door installationExterior and pre-hung doors are usually over $1,000 installed.
  • Electrical beyond a like-for-like swapNew outlets, circuits, panels, EV chargers.
  • Gas, water heaters, re-pipingLicensed C-36 plumber and permits.
  • Roofing, structural, room additionsLicensed B or C-39 contractor and permits.

Frequently asked questions

Most independent Orange County handymen charge $65 to $125 per hour with a one-hour minimum, or price common tasks flat: a TV mount is about $120 to $200, furniture assembly $60 to $125 per item, and a small drywall patch $50 to $150. A half day for a list of tasks runs $250 to $450. These are estimates; the pro sets the final price.

California law (Business and Professions Code 7048) lets a person work without a contractor license only when the whole job, labor and materials, is under $1,000, needs no building permit and is not part of a larger project. That is the sweet spot for independent handymen, so that is what this site is built around. If your job is bigger, we route it to licensed contractors instead.

Some are, most are not, and California does not require a license for small jobs under $1,000. We tell you that plainly on every page. Partners agree to stay within the legal limit, carry liability insurance and work only in their trade. Jobs that need a licensed contractor (permits, new wiring, gas, structural) are sent only to licensed partners.

Usually you do: the TV mount, the faucet, the furniture. That keeps the job under the legal limit and gets you exactly what you want. Many pros will pick up small hardware and add it to the bill with a receipt. Tell us in the request what you already have.

Most requests get a response the same or next business day, and many small jobs are scheduled within a few days. Say your preferred days and times in the request so the pro who takes it can confirm quickly.

Handy OC is a free matching service. We do not do the work. Your request goes to up to 3 independent local handyman businesses that cover your ZIP code and meet our partner criteria, and the one you choose confirms price and timing with you directly.

Small jobs. Done right.
